History: World Tourism Day 2020
UNTWO (United Nation’s World Tourism Organization) has designated 2020 as the year of tourism and rural development. This year is an opportunity to promote the potential of tourism to create jobs and opportunities.
For the 1st time in the history of world tourism day, the 2020 official tourism day will be hosted by a group of countries and not a single UNTWO member state. In the year 2019, India hosted the world tourism day with the theme ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all.
This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO statutes on 27 September 1970.
It was at its third session (Spain, September 1979) that the UNTWO general assembly decided to institute world tourism day, commencing in 1980.
The timing of world tourism day is particularly appropriate in that it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.
Themes: World Tourism Day (2017 to 2020)
The World Tourism Day 2017 theme was “Sustainable Tourism – a tool for development” and for 2018 the theme was “Tourism and Cultural Protection”.
The theme of world tourism day 2019 was ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’. This theme focuses on generating more and better jobs, especially for youth and women. Our PM Mr Narendra Modi also launched many schemes to create job opportunities for our youth and also introduced the Make in India and Made in India concept.
The theme for World Tourism Day 2020 is ‘Tourism: Building peace & fostering knowledge’. This year the theme focuses on building the knowledge and promoting the peace everywhere.
