Friendship Day is a day that is celebrated in different countries to cheers one day for friendship. Friendship Day was originated by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards in 1930. It was first celebrated by Paraguay in 1958 as the “International Friendship Day”.
International Friendship Day
It is celebrated in many countries like United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, India, etc. Some countries also provide holiday like in South Asia this day is dedicated to the friends’ love and companion which have been originated in the year 1935.
This day was also recognized in the year 1919 by the United States. But later, this day was officially celebrated.
The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the River Paraguay. Later, the World first Friendship Day was celebrated on 30th July 1958.
On 27th April 2011, the General Assembly of United Nations declared 30th July as the official Friendship Day. However, some countries, like India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. In Nepal, Friendship day is celebrated on 30 July each year. In Oberlin, Ohio, Friendship Day is celebrated on 9 April each year.
History: Happy Friendship Day
Friendship Day was founded by Joyce Hall the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930 and it was celebrated on 2nd August, a day when people remember their old days with their friends.
It is celebrated with greeting cards and in the 1920s especially commercial gimmick started to promote greeting cards. In the 1940s the number of Friendship Day cards available in the U.S. had reduced, people stopped buying and a large number of people died on this Holiday.
There is no evidence till today, but people kept this day alive and rejoice in Asia, where many countries have adopted this day. In 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, announced Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador for the Friendship Day at the United Nations.
The event was sponsored by the U.N. department of the Public Information and Disney Enterprises and was co-hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford.
The origin of the day
An international celebration was first suggested by the globe Friendship Crusade. This day was founded by Dr Ramón Artemio Bracho and his friends in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay, in 1958. They wanted to support the friendship and its importance in creating a culture of peace.
So, within the same year, they decided to celebrate Friendship Week in Puerto Pinasco and other places in Paraguay, they repeated the week and finished on 30 July, which they declared as Friendship Day. From there, celebrations of friendship grew and spread across solid ground, then the planet, and eventually, the UN declared a global Day of Friendship in 2011.
Friendship Day in India & around the world
The General Assembly announced official Friendship Day is 30th July, but in some countries like India, it is said to be celebrated on the first Sunday of August which is 2nd August in 2020. If we talk about Nepal it is celebrated on 30th July every year.
On this day people greet each other, provide cards, presents, and flowers to their friends. The International Day of Friendship on 30 July is the sole day celebrating friendship around the world.
States like Paraguay celebrate this day on 30 July, but other countries have different dates, like Argentina, Brazil, and Spain celebrate Friendship Day on 20 July, while in India and the US, the day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. In Finland and Estonia, Friendship Day is well known on an identical day as February 14.
